Obesity And Diabetes – The Common Denominator

Pre agriculture humans ate a diet high in fat and low in carbs. Today’s typical Western diet is the opposite, and that’s had consequences on waist lines and health, leading to obesity and diabetes.

The common denominator is a carb-loaded diet, and here’s why.

Your body has to keep its blood sugar level low, because when it’s high it’s very damaging. When you eat carbs (which are basically sugar), your pancreas gland produces insulin.

Insulin facilitates the entry of glucose into fat cells, where it’s converted into fat. So lots of carbs often means a fat body.

Because the natural human diet is low in carbs, the natural state of affairs is to have low insulin levels too. But a high carb diet creates high insulin levels.

The cells literally get bombarded with insulin, and eventually becoming less responsive. It’s a bit like if someone talks constantly at you for ages, you tend to switch off.

Your pancreas has to produce more and more insulin to get you cells to respond. Eventually your pancreas can’t keep up, and despite really high levels of insulin, your blood sugar rises.

You might be pre-diabetic for a while, but you’re heading for obesity and diabetes.

What Can You Do?

Obesity and diabetes can be overcome by gradually moving your diet towards a natural one – one your body has evolved to eat, and thrive on.

That includes reducing carbs – things like sugar, bread, cereals, potatoes and pasta. And replacing them with healthy fats – including seeds, nuts, avocados, quality fish and meat, and eggs.

With the best will in the world a lot of people struggle to make changes like this. Even when they know their health is suffering, and they’re shortening their lives with obesity and diabetes. That’s usually because of mental barriers to change. The barriers are often hidden.
